Erwin W. Straus’ “Temporal Horizons:” the concept of „today”

Marcin Moskalewicz

Abstract

The paper discuses an unpublished manuscript entitled „Temporal Horizons” written by Erwin W. Straus in 1952, whose translation into Polish is subsequently presented. The manuscript itself is focused upon the concept of „today,” interpreted as both a denominator of objective time and a representation of subjective experience of presence. Straus’ view on this dual aspect of „today” are presented in the context of his late published papers on time. His reflections are shown as being phenomenological in nature and critical of the dichotomization of the concept of time in the Western tradition.
