Instruments of the Russian Policy in the Syrian Conflict — Part I

Paweł Bielicki

Abstract

The subject of my article is an attempt to present the political, economic and military factors which because of the Russian Federation affect the current situation in Syria. At the outset, I carry out an analysis of the Soviet- and Russian-Syrian relations since early fifties of the twentieth century until the outbreak of the Arab Spring at the turn of 2010 and 2011. Subsequently, I trace political instruments of the Russian policy in the country ruled by President Assad; the policy that could involve, among others, a gradual reduction of military operations in eastern Ukraine and the Russian president’s striving for return to the international arena.
