"Ukraine from Trypillia": On the attempt to include the archaeological Trypillian culture to the collective memory of Ukrainians

Tomasz Paziewski

Abstract

The author assumes that the identity of a community always remains an unfinished process rather than being the final, ultimate effect of this process. From this angle, the Ukrainian collective consciousness is unfinalized at a higher level. The attempt at including the archaeological Trypillian culture to the collective memory of Ukrainians, described in the article, is considered as one of many possible ways to confirm the identity of the Ukrainian nation. Its further life will be decided upon by the Ukrainians themselves; and — according to the author — the “Tripillian syndrome of nationalized history”, as promoted by the website “Aratta. Window on Ukraine”, is not condemned to share the fate of intellectual sects, depending on the choice of Ukrainians instead.
